History

We are proud to present our latest project to enhance our communication with our members and the communities that we live in. We have approximately 2800 members from 16 different workplaces in Kitchener, Waterloo, Fergus, Hanover and Harriston. Every member of our local union works in Healthcare from Hospitals, Long Term Care, Retirement Homes, Supportive Living and Community Services. We represent our members at Grand River Hospital with 1200 members to Canadian Mental Health Association with 19 members and locations and sizes in between.

We originally were part of SEIU Local 220 and the dissatisfaction with our former International union is well documented and today we look back and are very confident that leaving SEIU and joining the CAW was the best decision Healthcare workers made. Bargaining Collective agreements instead of arbitrations has resulted in some of the strongest Collective Agreements we have in Healthcare. Supportive Social Activism allows us to give back and assist our communities we live in.

We were active members of CAW Local 302 up to until late 2006 when with the assistance of Buzz Hargrove and his recommendation to the executive officers of Local 302 to form a Local Union along geographical lines in Kitchener. This could not have been accomplished without the fore sight of President Nancy McMurphy and the officers of Local 302 to put in place the process that allowed the membership to decide their direction. As of February, 2007 our new Local has been up and running, growing and responding to daily issues and events.

We hope you enjoy our website and we look forward to your comments and seeing you at our events and activities. In Solidarity

Bill McLachlan
President, Local 1106
